NFA Engraving Requirements Explained
NFA engraving isn’t complicated, but it does need to be done correctly. There are specific requirements for depth, size, and what information needs to be included.
For a Form 1 firearm, the maker’s name and location need to be engraved on the receiver or frame. That includes the city and state. It needs to be legible and placed in a location that meets ATF requirements.
Depth matters. The engraving needs to meet minimum depth standards so it remains visible over time. Shallow or poorly done engraving might look fine at first, but it won’t hold up and it may not meet requirements.
Placement matters as well. It needs to be on a visible and appropriate part of the firearm, not hidden or placed somewhere that doesn’t comply.
The biggest issue we see is people trying to cut corners or using equipment that isn’t capable of doing the job properly. This is something that should be done once and done right.
If you’re having engraving done, make sure it meets the required standards and is placed correctly.
